One thing I’ve been using for nearly every track is putting the alpha compressor on my stereo bus. It hugs the mix nicely and gets my mixes feeling more cohesive. I find the best results come from having a medium attack, medium release, taking off about 5 db and then setting the mix to about 20-30 wet. Make sure to match gain so you’re not fooling yourself by just making things louder!
The other incredibly useful component to the plugin is using the soft clipper. To dial in the sweet spot, you want to just have the yellow light going off on the loudest transients in your mix, usually the kick or snare or sometimes both. It depends how clean you want the mix to sound but I find the soft clipper will usually buy me about 2-3 db on average of extra headroom that I can use towards the final limiter.
Would you be able to send a screenshot of your Black Box HG-2 mix buss settings as I am working in Logic Pro x and there is no compatibility for Pro Tools 3rd party plugin presets in this DAW; or maybe even just type out the settings? It would mean a lot – thanks
